Defining Gravedigging #1
Most people over here don't actually understand what gravedigging is. Most of you think that if a thread is more than a few months old and someone bumps it, it's gravedigging.

You're wrong.

You see, it depends. If the bump contains some useful/helpful information, it's not gravedigging! I believe @Oni agrees with me on this.

So please, the next time you see a user, new or old, that bumps an old thread, think before reporting/hating.

EDIT: *Note, this does not apply to threads that are not relevant now, say an intro, or a general discussion thread. This only applies to threads in the programming, hacking, design etc. sections.

I really like that you brought this up @Eclipse because I feel there is a bit of a lack of definition of what gravedigging actually is.

Indeed. There's been too many times when a user has been shunned for sharing something useful, albeit a little late.

Also: posting to say "don't gravedig" "your gravedigging omfg hxc" and shit is gravedigging. And spamming. You have provided nothing to the topic by doing this, as well as gave it another free bump.

IMHO people who do that are worse than the original gravedigger

Sometimes "gravedigging" is justified. Sometimes it isn't. It's at the moderation team's discretion to the determine that.

Agree, each thread should be based on It's own merits.

For example, If the nature of the thread Is "post here and PM me for the link" and the OP Is active, then I believe grave digging Is fine In that sense.

I agree but also I don't see why so many people hate gravedigging. Sometimes the old threads can still be helpful. Like a thread that was for a programming language might have stopped being posted in but people can still find it useful. If it wasn't on topic, I can see why it is a problem but if its relevant to the thread, I think its fine.

There is a certain level of irony in this thread...

A thread about gravedigging being brought back after 6 months of inactivity... It tastes like candy and MUST be fattening.

It's a judgement call to each and every staff member to decide if it's gravedigging or not, and obviously comments related to the subject and relevant shall not be considered as gravedigging. Though, if you're just going to post 'good post', then it's rather pointless and then a warning shall be issued to the member.

RE: Defining Gravedigging #10
Something one might consider to add to this definition, gravedigging is not defined by the age of the thread (When the original post was made), it's the last post/bump in the thread that determines whether it's really gravedigging or not. You can pretty much keep a thread alive for a long time by bumping it often and having other people post pretty frequently. (You can certainly disagree if you want, but it makes sense to me that you only count the last post before necrobumper leaves his post).

However say is the last post made in the thread was maybe more than 2 or 3 months old? (Or even weeks, depending on how you want to define it) then that would definetly be a necrobump. In inactive and smaller forums, gravedigging seems like an acceptable thing to do; it helps keep the forum active. However I suppose on a bigger forum such as sinister, gravediggin leads to annoyance.

One idea which I remember other forums implemented is to warn posters before posting on a thread. Pretty much a warning dialog down with the 'quick reply' that ways "Warning: This threads last post is older than x week/months. Posting in this thread may result in a warning or ban from staff". Worked pretty effective if you ask me. Also there's certain forums which one might consider implementing auto-locking, real world scenario would be the introduction sections. Why would you even keep into sections open for more than, say one or two weeks. I know another forum which does this, auto-locks intro threads after 7 days to prevent necrobumps. It's probably pretty easy to do this in mybb, just sayin.

Just dropping my ideas and feedback!
